Guided Imagery & Music: Stories of Creativity, Healing, and Hope

Guided Imagery and Music

At Voices of Heaven™ Where Little Hearts Learn to Feel, Express, and Connect I have seen how Guided Imagery & Music (GIM) therapy transforms lives. Combined with Music, Drawing, and Narrative (MDN), this creative approach helps people express emotions, unlock imagination, discover healing and creativity through music.

For me, it’s never just about the drawings it’s about the stories behind them. Each image carries a theme, every character has a name, and together they create a narrative that reflects the inner world of the person on their creative journey.

What is Guided Imagery & Music (GIM) Therapy?

Guided Imagery & Music (GIM) therapy is a clinical, evidence-based process where carefully chosen music invites imagery, memories, and emotions to surface. With the support of a trained therapist, clients safely explore their inner world.

In my private practice I often use Music, Drawing, and Narrative (MDN) therapy alongside GIM. Whilst listening to carefully selected music, drawings are created, and clients are invited to share the story behind their images at their level of comfort. This process turns invisible feelings into something tangible and expressive and as a therapist I feel truly honoured to be a part of that journey.

Creative Music Therapy for Autism

One of the most powerful uses of GIM and MDN is in creative music therapy for autism. Children and teens on the spectrum often discover new ways to communicate and connect through this approach.

A Personal Story from My Practice

Among the many stories I’ve witnessed, one that stays close to my heart is the journey of a teenage girl on the autism spectrum through Guided Imagery & Music (GIM) and Music, Drawing, and Narrative (MDN) therapy. In these sessions, drawings are created with carefully selected classical music, opening the door to her imagination.

Every drawing had a theme, and every character she created had a name. It was beautiful to see the narratives unfold as she expressed her inner world through colours, shapes, and stories.

She drew a Tree of Life that is unlike any I have ever seen, overflowing with creativity and alive with the expression of all that is closest to her heart. Her artwork reflected rich emotional landscapes sometimes vibrant and joyful, other times stormy and complex. Week after week, she discovered new aspects of herself, and her creativity continued to blossom. For her, GIM with MDN wasn’t just therapy it became her language of freedom and imagination.

Music Therapy for Grief and Trauma

Music therapy also offers profound healing for those facing loss, anxiety, or painful life events. Music therapy for grief and trauma provides a safe way to process feelings that are too overwhelming to express in conversation alone.

Guided Imagery & Music invites people into a deeper journey of reflection, while MDN allows them to express these discoveries through images and stories. For many, this becomes a pathway to understanding and healing.

Music Therapy and the NDIS

For NDIS participants, music therapy NDIS Australia funding makes it possible to access professional therapeutic support. GIM and MDN can assist with:

  • Emotional regulation

  • Communication and self-expression

  • Building social skills

  • Reducing anxiety and stress

  • Developing creativity and confidence

It’s important to know that under the NDIS, music therapy must be delivered by an AMTA-registered music therapist. This ensures high standards, safety, and evidence-based care.

Why MDN Unlocks the Creative Mind

The combination of music, drawing, and narrative therapy offers a unique way to unlock the creative mind:

  • Images become real – Feelings too big for words find shape in colour and form.

  • Stories emerge – Themes in imagery reveal insights hidden in the subconscious.

  • Freedom of expression – Drawing and storytelling give children, teens, and adults a safe outlet.

  • Creativity awakens – This process is about freedom, not artistic skill.
